As blockchain technology has matured, financial institutions have increasingly adopted it for transaction clearing and settlement. This shift has changed how certain banking activity is recorded and, in some cases, has reduced the effectiveness of traditional asset-location methods. We use specialized analytical techniques designed to identify banking transactions occurring within blockchain-supported systems now used by a growing number of banks and brokerages.
Nearly all non-cash financial activity—including deposits, checks, debit card transactions, online bill payments, and wire transfers—traditionally flows through established networks such as SWIFT, ACH, or credit card systems. These transactions are processed through intermediary platforms that handle backend settlement and confirmation with the originating financial institution. By analyzing the electronic transaction footprints generated within these systems, it is often possible to identify active bank and brokerage accounts associated with a subject, unless the individual has exercised their right to limit information sharing under the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act.
As more banks move away from third-party transaction processors and toward blockchain-based systems, fewer accounts can be identified using legacy methods alone. To address this shift, we began compiling and preserving transaction ledger data in 2014, allowing us to trace activity within these newer systems. Without this historical ledger continuity, accounts held at institutions using blockchain-based infrastructure are often not detectable through conventional asset-location approaches.
